History of the Govt.
School for the Blind :~ |
|
The school came into force on 20th September, 1968. Shri. Sunil Kr. Pal was
the first Governing-Officer of the school. He started educating with only five
students on the onset. Practically education started smoothly from January
1970 onwards.
Shri. Debabrata Bandyopadhyay, then
Minister of Jail & Social Welfare, officially inaugurated the
students hostel/ residential campus on 5th July, 1986. He
developed an expert-committee for the upliftment of the school. As
prescribed by that committee the post of the Governing Officer was
abolished; instead the post of Principal was created who would also be the
D.D.O. & Head of the Office. Posts for five expert teachers, two
craft-teachers, one music-teacher, two livestock & farm-teachers and four
additional staffs were sanctioned. Arrangements for a total of hundred (75+25) residential
students were also sanctioned. . |
|
Shri. Sadhan Chandra Das was appointed as the first Principal of this school
on 1st November 1989. At present Shri. Phani Bhusan Sen is the
second working Principal of the institute.
This prosperous school now stands head-high as the only biggest residential
government institute for the blind of not only Cooch Behar but entire North
Bengal amidst various hurdles. Credit behind this success goes to the
teachers-employees and students of the school. Many generous citizens, Red
Cross, Lions Club, different social organisations, State Social Development
Deptt., District Administration and above all people in general have cared
for establishing this institute by extending their kind efforts and
suggestions. For these overwhelm kindness we owe our sincere gratitude to
them all. |

Notable
among the outstanding students of this school is the name of Shri. Subal
Kar. He has done Ph.D. in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru
University, Delhi. There are many success stories as such. Presently
many students of this school are studying in colleges and universities.
Few have even been appointed as teachers in various schools through
School Service Commission exam.
It gives us enough pleasure to narrate when in 1994 our school won the
"Best Award" among the institutions controlled by the West
Bengal Social Welfare Department and a cash prize of Rs.10,000.

Even some
teachers of this school hold state awards in teaching. Many of our
students have passed the Madhyamik and Higher-secondary exams with first
division securing more than 80% marks. They have also shown outstanding
performances in all India music exams. Apart from these the students have
continued excelling in other areas like sports competition, cultural
competitions, etc.

Targets and Needs :~ |
|
We have
to proceed still a long way ahead. Our vision is to transform this school as an
ideal national institute per excellence with modern facilities based on
scientific technologies amidst open-hearted compassion. To meet that target we
foremost need to satisfy the following requirements :~
|
|
Raise the dwelling expenditure allotted per head if
possible, keeping parity with overall assessment of the students.
Arrangement of a vehicle to facilitate training curriculum,
etc. for the handicapped child.
Additional fund flow for purchase of modern
equipments.
Widen the present scope further for the
non-residential students.
Fill up the vacant posts as early as possible.
Our earnest appeal to all concerned for fulfillment of the above requirements
as early as possible. On behalf of the institution we are bound to our social
responsibility of letting our children develop into perfect practical human
beings.
|
|
|
Need to set up a separate residential complex for the
female students.
Need for a park with sports accessories for the kids.
Residential quarters for the staffs need to be set
up.
Arrangement of minimum 10 bighas of land for training
in agriculture and farming.
Tools to aid stipend-based training in craftsmanship
to be organised.
Appointment of more efficient staffs.
