Our School Building

History of services to the physically handicapped in West Bengal dates back to hundred years which were mainly of private endeavours. Provision for such services towards the physically handicapped in the Government sector was taken up in the late '60s. Henceforth the idea of setting up a residential school for the visually handicapped was taken up in Cooch Behar town near the airport at present.

Plan for setting up the school was taken up as per the Govt. Order No. 14327-S.W/I.E/56/65 dated 13th July 1965, signed in by the Deputy Secretary of the Relief & Social Welfare Department of the then Government of West Bengal. Government acquired the concrete foundation of "Megh Mandir" belonging to royal dynasty and adjacent 1.76 acres of land (as per Land Acquisition Act, 1895) for the said purpose. Previously there used to stay airport employees and other private staffs of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar at the Megh Mandir.
.

At first education system started with a capacity for 50 blind students at this institution, directed by the Women & Child Development and Social Welfare Department. A gazetted Officer, two Teachers, twelve permanent and two temporary employees were appointed on the onset.
.

History of the Govt. School for the Blind :~

The school came into force on 20th September, 1968. Shri. Sunil Kr. Pal was the first Governing-Officer of the school. He started educating with only five students on the onset. Practically education started smoothly from January 1970 onwards.

Shri. Debabrata Bandyopadhyay, then Minister of Jail & Social Welfare, officially inaugurated the students hostel/ residential campus on 5th July, 1986. He developed an expert-committee for the upliftment of the school. As prescribed by that committee the post of the Governing Officer was abolished; instead the post of Principal was created who would also be the D.D.O. & Head of the Office. Posts for five expert teachers, two craft-teachers, one music-teacher, two livestock & farm-teachers and four additional staffs were sanctioned. Arrangements for a total of hundred (75) residential students were also sanctioned.
.

Shri. Sadhan Chandra Das was appointed as the first Principal of this school on 1st November 1989. At present Shri. Phani Bhusan Sen is the second working Principal of the institute.

This prosperous school now stands head-high as the only biggest residential government institute for the blind of not only Cooch Behar but entire North Bengal amidst various hurdles. Credit behind this success goes to the teachers-employees and students of the school. Many generous citizens, Red Cross, Lions Club, different social organisations, State Social Development Deptt., District Administration and above all people in general have cared for establishing this institute by extending their kind efforts and suggestions. For these overwhelm kindness we owe our sincere gratitude to them all.

     Outstanding Results & performance

Notable among the outstanding students of this school is the name of Shri. Subal Kar. He has done Ph.D. in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. There are many success stories as such. Presently many students of this school are studying in colleges and universities. Few have even been appointed as teachers in various schools through School Service Commission exam.
It gives us enough pleasure to narrate when in 1994 our school won the "Best Award" among the institutions controlled by the West Bengal Social Welfare Department and a cash prize of Rs.10,000.

Prize Distribution Ceremony held on 13-JUL-2007

Even some teachers of this school hold state awards in teaching. Many of our students have passed the Madhyamik and Higher-secondary exams with first division securing more than 80% marks. They have also shown outstanding performances in all India music exams. Apart from these the students have continued excelling in other areas like sports competition, cultural competitions, etc.
